October Calendar with the 15th and 16th circled and noted as Upcoming Days Off

Thursday, Oct. 15, is Parent Conference Day in Kent County Public Schools. The elementary schools and the middle school will be closed all day for parent conferences. The high school will have half day early dismissal Oct. 15 beginning at 11:25 a.m. and parent conferences in the afternoon. All schools are closed Friday, Oct. 16 for staff professional development and the annual Maryland State Education Association conference.

The Office of Teaching and Learning is responsible for supporting principals, supervisors and teachers in the process of identifying the content of curriculum taught in our schools, the teaching techniques used by our teachers and the testing that shows how our students are doing. We strive to help all students realize their academic and human potential by determining curriculum, assessment, teaching and extended learning options.

Mission and Vision

The Office of Teaching and Learning will provide district leadership, support, and accountability. In collaboration with other district and building administrators we will work to inspire classroom success, promote personal excellence as well as responsible citizenship.

The Office of Teaching and Learning will:

Develop curriculum and assessments aligned to Maryland’s College and Career Ready Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, C3 Frameworks and the Maryland State Curricula.
Monitor implementation of the district’s goals as outlined in the Master Plan and the school improvement process.
Provide support for principals and teachers as they address the diverse learning needs of students.

Professional Learning Communities

Professional learning that increases educator effectiveness and results for all students occurs within learning communities committed to continuous improvement, collective responsibility and goal alignment.

Effective learning communities engage in a cycle of continuous improvement involving each of the following steps:

The use of data to determine student and educator learning needs.
Identification of shared goals for student and educator learning.
Professional learning to extend educators' knowledge of content, content-specific pedagogy, how students learn and management of classroom environments.
Selection and implementation of appropriate evidence-based strategies to achieve student and educator learning goals.
Application of the learning with local support at the work site.
Use of evidence to monitor and refine implementation.
Evaluation of results.
