Senior F.A.N. Night

3rd Annual Future Aspirations Night

May 30, 2019

KCHS Auditorium

Seniors Arrive by 5:30pm

Program begins 6pm

On Thursday, May 30th, we are having our 3rd Annual Future Aspirations Night. It is our goal that every senior has a viable plan after high school to further his or her education through college, military, or the workforce.

We want students to be proud of their goals for next year and we want to give each student in the Class of 2019 a chance to share that goal with teachers, family, and friends. Students will wear caps and gowns and be prepared to show the audience a representation of what they will be doing next year.

After the event in the auditorium, we are planning a cookout in the courtyard of hamburgers, hotdogs, and sides. We are inviting parents, sibling, KCHS staff and their families. We want to celebrate as a school community this very special time for our Seniors, the Class of 2019! Please RSVP to https://2019seniorfannight.eventbrite.com If you have any other questions, please contact Mrs. Barbara Jones in our front office at 410-778-4540 or bcjones@kent.k12.md.us

Senior Pranks

Seniors:

Please be advised that the consequences of using or possessing illegal substances and senior “pranks” in the weeks leading up to the end of the school year can cost a student the chance to participate in prom, graduation, and other ceremonies culminating one’s high school career.  No one wants to see what should be a great time in the life of a graduating senior marred by immature and unwise decisions. More importantly, we don’t want to see any of our students engage in unsafe behavior that could have consequences for themselves and others.

Next Generation Scholars

This weekend, Next Generation Scholars students had the opportunity to attend "Discovery Fest" at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Special military displays and booths were set-up for students to interact with professionals and to learn about different careers and projects related to APG.

In addition to the outdoor displays, there was a K9 demonstration, a STEM science fair, a career fair, and more. We had a great day!

We had 11 students from KCMS and KCHS attend. I've attached some photos from the day. Students played a BINGO game that encouraged interaction with the different display areas (items like "thank a first responder for their service" and "ask about xyz career"). All students completed the cards, and 100% of students agreed or strongly agreed that the day was a positive experience.

Special thanks to Rich and Lauren Shaw for coming as chaperones!

Maker Space

It is time to register for the KCPS MakerSpace Summer Camp! MakerSpaces provide a place for students with shared interests to gather and work collaboratively on projects. Projects are entirely student led and span a wide array of interests such as coding, stop motion animation, podcasting, virtual reality, and more! Each week will not have a specific focus, but rather will simply allow students time to explore, create, and learn. Students are accepted on a first come, first serve basis and the camp is limited in the number of students we can accept per week. They are invited to attend as many or as little weeks as they would like, and each week has a materials fee of $25 dollars.  All camps will run Monday through Thursday at KCHS from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. Camp is open to students who are 3rdgraders and above AS OF the 2018/2019 school year. Please direct any questions to Mr. Bill Poore, Supervisor of Technology (wpoore@kent.k12.md.us or 410-778-7139). The dates have been included below:

Week #1: June 24th - June 27th

Week #2: July 8th - July 11th

Week #3: July 15th - July 18th

Week #4: July 29th - August 1st

Wil Haygood Returns to Kent County!

Renowned author Wil Haygood returns to Kent County.

Wil Haygood, author of The Butler and now his latest novel, Tigerland 1968-1969: A City Divided, a Nation Torn Apart, and a Magical Season of Healing, will be speaking at a community event and celebration on March 21st at Kent County Middle School. The event will begin at 5:30pm with a spaghetti dinner hosted by the Kent County Middle School basketball team, followed by performances and readings by local students, teachers, and community members as well as what promises to be an engaging and memorable discussion with Mr. Haygood at 6:30. All are welcome!

His visit culminates a month of reading and preparation by students as Kent County High School students grades 9 through 12 have received very own copy of the novel Tigerland by Wil Haygood in their English classes, with connections to their history classes. To kick off the reading of his novel, Mr. Haygood visited students, teachers, and community members in November. He met with small groups of students, signed books, discussed lessons with teachers, ate lunch with student athletes with food provided from the KCHS culinary arts students, and met with community members as well. Mr. Haygood will return to Kent County in March. This time, over the course of two days, he will meet with all high school students, student athletes, teachers, and 8th grade students in addition to the community evening event.

Thank you Eastman!

KCHS would like to thank Eastman for their substantial donation to support the AP Chemistry program. Because of their continuing support, we have been able to offer AP Chemistry for the first time in five years. There are 21 students enrolled this year and we hope to grow the program in years to come. These students have the opportunity to take a rigorous college-level chemistry course in high school. This course also promotes STEM careers to our students, which are in high demand throughout our economy. Eastman values the importance of providing our students these opportunities and we are very thankful for their support.

KCHS Interact

While bullying is never okay, October is nationally recognized as anti-bullying month.

HS Interact students take the opportunity to remind each other and staff that if you see bullying occur, say something. It's better to choose kindness.

Congratulations Mr. King!

We are excited to announce that Brett King, engineering teacher at Kent County High School, has been named the recipient of the October Golden Anchor Award.

Congratulations Mr. King!  He exemplifies the great work KCPS teachers are doing every day.

Congratulations Dylan!!!

Dylan placed 11th overall individual out of 87 individuals at the World Dairy Expo.
The team placed 1st in the Holstein breed, which included placing a class of heifers and cows and giving oral reasons on both classes. Although no Maryland team member finished 1st, they were consistant throughout their judging of the 10 classes and their reasons which earned them the covetted 3rd spot invited to Europe!!!
