Kent County High School held a schoolwide assembly featuring music by the school band, speeches and scenes performed by theater students.

Among the guest speakers at the assembly, Capt. Brian Wharton described life in the military, having served in the U.S. Army since 2010 including deployment in Afghanistan.

"Today is the day to remember that veteran who hung up his boots, to remember the proud individual who sought no fame but sacrificed a great portion of their lives for something bigger," Wharton told the students. "Look out for that veteran because they looked out for you."

Wharton's father is the high school band director, Keith Wharton.

The high school theater and band students had also performed patriotic selections the evening prior during a special event at the Deep Blue at Kitty Knight restaurant in Georgetown.

Rock Hall Elementary School welcomed guests from the town's American Legion Sgt. Preston Ashley Post 228 on Nov. 11. They spoke with fourth and fifth graders about Veterans Day.

Galena Elementary School paid special tribute to veterans with a Red, White and Blue Spirit Day. Students and staff dressed in patriotic colors as a thank you to all who served.
