From Dr. Mary Boswell-McComas, Superintendent of Kent County Public Schools, as given at the Kent County Board of Education meeting Monday, Aug. 12:
I love KCPS!
I would like to open with expressions of gratitude for the number of people who have spent time meeting with me this past month. You could choose to be anywhere, and you chose to make time to help me and our Kent County community in service to our children and young people.
In the past four weeks I am pleased to report that I have met with our Kent County Commissioners, our county administrator, the Kent County Council of Governments, law enforcement leaders, emergency management leaders, county health department leaders, the Chesapeake College leadership, local nonprofit leaders hosted by the Kent Cultural Alliance, Choptank Community Health System leaders and the Rotary Club.
I was graciously interviewed by The Spy and WCTR on their radio program “My Generation.” I toured our own student-run radio station WKHS, along with meeting our fall athletic coaches and our bus drivers.
Additionally, I want to express gratitude for our food service Staff who have provided a grand total of 19,478 meals to students this summer across 13 locations.
I also want to thank our custodial team who have worked diligently throughout the summer to clean and prepare for our upcoming school year.
As I mentioned, I met with our bus drivers this month to welcome back their important service as our first and last point of KCPS contact each day with our students.
In addition to meeting with so many caring Kent County leaders, I have been participating in local events such as the Rock Hall Pirates and Wenches festival Dunking Booth Fundraiser Saturday, Aug. 10.
I look forward to attending the many Back to School Give-Away Drives including one hosted by our local realtors. On Saturday, Aug 24, I’ll be in Fountain Park with the Bayside HOYAS’ Back to School Drive and the very next day on Sunday, Aug 25. I’ll be at the Minary’s Dream Alliance School Drive at the American Legion building.
We have launched our “Back to School Central” website, which serves as a one-stop shop for families preparing for the school year. Please take a look.
And if you have changed addresses, it’s critical you update us so that we have transportation in place for the first day of school.
In closing, we welcome our New Teachers to KCPS Tuesday, Aug. 20 and all faculty and staff return the following Monday, Aug 26.
We are down to only 12 workdays left before our amazing students return. I invite you to fall in love again with KCPS this year!
